How to become a media professional in women’s sport?
Women have participated in sport for centuries, but the perception that women’s sport is inferior to men’s is reflected in inequalities in training, facilities, pay and recognition. Efforts to transform social and cultural attitudes towards women’s sport are central to the sector in India and internationally, with the Khelo India scheme’s success in developing women’s sports, the performance of India’s women athletes in the Olympic games, and the continued international sporting successes of women athletes in general.
These efforts have been accompanied by a huge increase in viewership and social media following of women’s sport, in India as well as internationally. The sector is rapidly growing and the need of our time is to have journalists with professional training in social, political and cultural aspects of women’s sports that is essential for its nuanced, objective and balanced coverage in media.
YOU CAN BE ONE OF THEM!
If you are a current or aspiring media professional aiming to cover women’s sport, this training programme is for you. It includes awareness and understanding of key issues on women’s sport, including inequalities in gender, identity, visibility, profile, participation, pay, inclusivity etc. It is based on extensive research and sector aspirations, aiming to enhance your experience and professional capabilities.
This British Council funded programme has been designed drawing on the specialist experience of three partners, Bath Spa University, with its pioneering BA (Hons) Sports Media Production (in association with Bath City FC, Bath Rugby, Team GB etc.), Jadavpur University, among India’s top ranked research-led universities with ground-breaking internationally funded research from the School of Media, Communication and Culture, and renowned Delhi-based sports media production company Sportzworkz, credited with award-winning productions for media platforms.
